READ ACROSS AMERICA
The
National Education Association calls
for every child to be reading in the
company of a caring adult.
Celebrate Dr. Seuss

You're never too old, too wacky, too
wild,
To pick up a book and read with a child.
You're never too busy, too cool, or too
hot,
To pick up a book and share what you've
got.
In schools and communities,
Let's gather around,
Let's pick up a book,
Let's pass it around.
There are kids all around you,
Kids who will need
Someone to hug,
Someone to read.
Come join us March 2nd
Your own special way
And make this America's
Read to Kids Day.

RED RIBBON WEEK:
An initiative of the Peabody Health
& Physical Education Department
MORE

Red Ribbon Week
came to existence following the tragic death
of Drug Enforcement Administration Special
Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena. In
1985, Agent Camarena was abducted, tortured
and murdered in Mexico while investigating
drug trafficking. He was survived by
his wife and three children. Friends
and family started a movement to honor him
and fight back against the destruction
caused by the illegal use of drugs. A red
ribbon became the symbol of this fight
against drug abuse. In 1988, the
United States Congress proclaimed Red Ribbon
Week, and First Lady Nancy Reagan served as
the honorary chairperson. More than
100,000 schools now participate.
Students in Peabody will have the
opportunity to declare themselves drug free
by wearing a red ribbon during the week of
October 20. In addition, essay
contests will be held for students in grade
5 and a Bumper Sticker Contest for students
in grades 6-8. Winning essays and
bumper stickers will be displayed at the
Peabody Public Library. Please join in
activities and discussion with the students
of Peabody in a fight against drug abuse!
Red Ribbon Week
is endorsed by: Mayor Michael Bonfanti; Dr.
C. Milton Burnett, Superintendent of
Schools; the Peabody School Committee and
the Peabody City Council.

In royal lace dresses,
All full of elegance and even more,
How grand it is to open a book's door.
To glance at beauty and grace,
Queens with powder upon their face!
Mystery, fantasy, wonder galore,
If only I read this book even more!
Dancing at the ball,
Flying over it all.

Well what do you know!
To go to places and cross the brook.
