Annual Report of the School Committee of the Town of South Danvers. April 1856.

Peabody High School

Mr. J. W. Colcord, Principal.  Miss. L. R. Wright, Assistant
The change of Principal in this School, and circumstances leading to it, have been referred to.  Mr. C. Has exerted himself to meet the expectations of the friends of the school.  At the commencement of the year, a lack of discipline was noticeable, which caused some complaint; but there was an improvement in this respect, and the friends of the school, at its close, were well satisfied with its appearance.  Mr. C. is a thorough teacher, and we believe will spare no effort to remedy the defect suggested.

In consequence of the large number of scholars admitted into this school, the past year, it became necessary to employ and assistant.  Miss Wright was employed, and has proved to be an excellent one; she has given much character to the school, by an earnest and efficient performance of her duties.

During the year, the Peabody Medal has been completed, and awarded according to the plan adopted the previous year.  The Medal has been awarded to eighteen scholars, all of whom had satisfactorily passed a three years' course of the school.

During the year, a new regulations has been made, which we hope will tend to increase the interest of scholars, and set as a healthy stimulus.  The teachers are required to keep a true and accurate record of the scholarship and deportment of each scholar, and at the close of the year print it in schedule form, and distribute copies of it among parents and visitors.  We are glad to see that the interest in this school has not abated; and we hope that the expectations of its friends will be fully answered.

The following graduates have received the Peabody Medal:
