Annual Report of the School Committee of the Town of South Danvers. April 1857.

Peabody High School

Mr. J..W. Colcord, Principal
Miss L.R. Wright, Assistant

The appearance of this school at examination indicated fidelity on the part of the teachers, and a good disposition in the scholars. Mr. Colcord's acquirements we believe amply sufficient for the place he occupied.  The recitations and the order of school throughout the year were very respectable.  Mr. Colcord labored conscientiously to do his duty, and we cheerfully given him credit for many good qualities as a teacher.  But the Committee have been constrained to remark the same deficiency which was observable at the commencement of his teaching, but which it is hoped would disappear in time, and when the disadvantages under which he began should be removed.  In a situation as important as this, we look for that force of character in the teacher which will impress itself commandingly upon the school, and will give manifest tone and elevation to it.

To Miss Wright the Committee award highest praise. She is not only efficient and exact in instruction, but she has the rare faculty of imparting, together with a clear explanation of lessons, valuable collateral information. - The recitations in her department were uniformly excellent.

At the close of school upon Examinations-Day a number of books - purchased with proceeds fo Mr. Peabody's donation - were distributed among certain scholars, the apportionment being made in accordance with a schedule of scholarship and deportment furnished by the teachers, and the length of time which the scholars had respectively been connected with the school.

The Peabody Medal was conferred upon the following scholars, graduates of this year:

Catherine Flint | John H. Manning | Sarah J. Smith | Alfred S. Osborne | Levi Preston
