Higgins Middle School Peer Mentoring Program

The Higgins Middle School peer mentoring program creates an opportunity for us to intentionally engage our incoming sixth graders through relationships.  It is based on the proven power of student-to-student mentoring, where every incoming students in a school is mentored by an accomplished and caring "upperclassman."

Younger students often have a diffficult time adjusting to a new school and incoming sixth graders at Higgins are often nervous or even fearful of their new environment.  This transition period is when many students feel "disconnected," give up, or display at-risk behavior.

We at HMS recognize that our "upperclassmen" possess an incredible advantage in shaping the lives of our younger students.  This program has provided a system to mobilize a team of eighth graders to offer friendship, support and guidance to our sixth graders as they begin their Higgins career.

How does the program work?

All incoming sixth grade students will be matched with eighth graders, easing school transitions and providing ongoing support and guidance for academic and social success.

Throughout the year, mentors will enter the classrooms of the younger students to facilitate activities and discussions designed to address key issues that students face.

Mentoring Sessions will last approximately 30 minutes and will be planned ahead of time.  A special "Peer Mentoring Day" grade six schedule will be used.

Benefits
- Sixth graders are now connected to older students that care and help them steer through social mine fields and reach new heights of personal success.

- By creating positive connections and behaviors among students, HMS will experience a positive impact in students involvement.

- This unique, student-led program enhances leadership skills for our accomplished eighth graders.
